Leaderboard

Leaderboard

People will do for a team what they will never do for themselves.

Leaderboards rank members, teams, or groups by points, achievements, or streaks. Team boards score on average rather than total, so a team of six competes fairly against a team of twenty.

Visible progress pulls them back

The single biggest lever in the suite

Individual competition works on the people already at the top and quietly discourages everyone else. Team competition works on almost everyone, because the motivation shifts from wanting to win to not wanting to let anyone down. What we consistently see when team-based leaderboards go into a platform is engagement multiplying by a factor of ten or more, which is a larger effect than any other single mechanic we deploy.

How boards are built

Everything available to you.

Configured and placed with the shortcode builder. No two need to look alike.

What a challenge actually is

A leaderboard, a time limit, and something to score. That is the whole recipe.

30 day sprint

12 days remaining

Act

Members log scorecard entries and complete checklists

The challenge scores both online and offline activity into one total.

Measure

Points roll up to the individual and to their team

Two boards run at once, because some members are motivated by rank and others by not letting the team down.

Team board updates live, ranked on average

Northeast at 412 average with nine members, Coastal at 388 with fourteen. Size is not an advantage.

See

Boards appear on profiles, in the feed, and on the challenge page

Nobody has to navigate anywhere to find out where they stand.

Result

Twelve days left, and three teams within forty points

Which is the condition that makes the last week of a challenge the most active week.

Recipes

Three you could build this afternoon.

Read them as when, only if, then. That is the whole grammar of the system.

Rank most improved, not just highest

When

A weekly board refreshes

Only if

Any member

Then

Publish a Most Improved board alongside the leaderboard, so the people who will never top the main board still have something to win

Let coaches verify what matters

When

A challenge ends

Only if

A new one begins

Then

Rebuild teams dynamically from tags, which stops cliques hardening and gives everyone a fresh start

Put the board where they already are

When

Any page load

Only if

Member is logged in

Then

Drop a compact board into the activity feed, because a leaderboard on a page nobody visits is not a leaderboard

Before you build

Three things worth knowing.

Note

Never rank teams on totals. The largest team wins every time and everyone else stops competing inside two weeks.

Note

A permanent all-time board rewards seniority and demotivates new members. Run time-bound windows alongside it.

Note

The bottom of a public board is a real risk. Show a member their own position and the few around them rather than a full public ranking of everybody.
