Free & Paid

Free & Paid

Free, paid, or earned.

WooCommerce ticketing for premium sessions, open access for community events, and a third option most platforms never consider: events unlocked by level, points, achievement, or membership tier.

The event lifecycle

Schedule

It gets created and found

People commit to coming

They show up, or they do not

>

Reward

It feeds the rest of the platform

There is a third access model

Most platforms think in two categories, free and paid, which leaves the most interesting option unused. An event can be earned. Gate a mastermind behind Level 5, an advanced session behind completing the foundation series, or a founder call behind a streak, and the ticket becomes something a member works toward rather than something they buy. That converts an event from a transaction into a destination, and it makes every mechanic upstream of it matter more.

Access models

Everything available to you.

Any of these combine, so one event can be free for some members and paid for others.

Managing demand

Capacity

Worked example

One mastermind, four ways in

Same event, same room. Four different members arrive by four different routes.

Quarterly mastermind

40 seats

Register

Enterprise tier: included, seat reserved

Ten seats held back before anyone else can book.

Register

Pro tier: 149 dollars, member price

Guest price is 349, which makes the membership visible in the moment.

Register

Level 5 members: free, earned

They did not pay. They qualified, which is a better story for everyone.

Register

Everyone else: 349, if seats remain

Usually they do not, which is exactly the point.

Reward

All four groups attend the same session

And attendance scores identically regardless of how they got in.

Recipes

Three you could build this afternoon.

Read them as when, only if, then. That is the whole grammar of the system.

Make the membership visible at checkout

When

A guest views a paid event

Only if

They are not a member

Then

Show both prices side by side, because the difference between 149 and 349 sells the membership better than a pricing page does

Turn points into a real currency

When

A paid event opens

Only if

Member has a sufficient points balance

Then

Allow points to cover part or all of the ticket, which gives every other mechanic on the platform a concrete value

Reserve before you sell

When

A high-demand event is created

Only if

Tiers have different entitlements

Then

Hold allocations per tier and release the remainder publicly, so paying members never lose a seat to a guest

Before you build

Three things worth knowing.

Note

Earned access is underused and it is the most interesting of the three. It gives your gamification something real to be worth.

Note

Show member pricing against guest pricing every time. It is the cheapest membership upsell you have.

Note

Free does not mean untracked. A community meetup should still score, still tag, and still feed streaks.
